We firmly believe that young people who study Geography gain a tremendously valuable and fulfilling set of professional and personal skills. The inspiration to study the subject can come from almost anywhere, and it’s never too early to provide that spark. Children’s books such as the popular Horrible Geography series can play a vital role. That’s why we approached the author and publisher with an idea for a unique addition to this wonderful range – a Horrible Geography of Scotland. We were delighted when they enthusiastically agreed…!
Our Horrible Geography of Scotland will be an exciting new book suitable for late primary and early secondary school children. It will provide a good baseline knowledge of Scotland’s remarkable geography, and we hope it will inspire young people to seek out and study the subject in later school and beyond. Our project will provide books to schools across Scotland, along with specially commissioned curricular-linked lesson plans: these will help teachers to use the books in the classroom, and help engage children directly with some of the stories. An initial print-run of 5,000 books will allow us to reach a signifcant proportion of Scotland’s school children. We will also create an attractive exhibition, drawn largely from the text and images of the book, to display in our public visitor and education centre in Perth, and make available to others.
We are appealing to our Members, Fellows and other supporters, and hope to raise at least £28,000 to support the costs of commissioning and printing the new books, developing age-appropriate lesson plans, creating an attractive and engaging exhibition, promoting project opportunities and benefts, distributing materials to schools, and co-ordinating the project to ensure that it is delivered effectively.
