David Shukman FRSGS: Deep Sea Gold Rush (DUMFRIES)
28th January @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
As demand grows for valuable minerals, there are plans to open a new frontier in mining: in the deep ocean. Rocks on the sea floor contain far more gold, copper, zinc and rare-earth elements than those on land. But environmentalists are appalled at the prospect of damage to fragile marine ecosystems. As Science Editor of BBC News, David has pioneered coverage of this development and explores its pros and cons.
