Visitor Centre Open
14th June @ 1:00 pm - 16th June @ 4:30 pm
A library full of explorers, a 3D Earth projector, and eons of geological time – that’s right, it can mean only one thing: the Fair Maid’s House Visitor Centre is open for the season!
In our Explorers’ Room, there will be inspiring stories and fascinating ephemera from the likes of David Livingstone, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott, Neil Armstrong and Karen Darke. In our multi-media Earth Room, there will be hands-on opportunities to learn about geo-politics and the Earth’s tectonic forces. And in our map room, there will be time to get lost in our captivating collection of cartographic treats!
But that’s not all. For a limited time only, an international exhibition on Oman will be installed in our display space which details the intriguing geography of Arabia’s Empty Quarter – the Rub Al Khali – the largest sand desert in the world.
This exhibition will also tell the tale of Mark Evans, a British explorer who recently trekked across the Empty Quarter in the historic footsteps of Betram Thomas. Thomas, an RSGS Livingstone Medallist, was the first to complete a crossing of this arid, hostile environment in 1931, taking just sixty days.
